ABSTRACT
Photointerpretation on Athos peninsula in Chalkidiki, in Greece. The
study takes place with airphotographs in scale 1:60,000, 1:20,000. It
refers to factors that influence coasts as mountain crests, inclina
tions, drainage. It also refers to landslide's phenomena and the pos
sibilities to approach coasts. A discrimination of various smoothness
of coasts is done. The possibilities of observation with or without
diopters x3 and x8 are being searched through. The particular impor
tance of photointerpretation is recognized in order to evaluate align
ment and altimétrie details to have conclusions about coast generation
and evaluation. The importance of Athos peninsula is emphasized also
because of the existence of various monasteries of enormous historical
and cultural interest. A relevant example is given about it. Aspects
based on photointerpretation for further photogrammetric research are
carmen ted.
1. INTRODUCTION.
Among the various landforms, coasts concentrate multiple interest (sci
entific, economical, political, cultural, military).
The requirement of the study of the coasts is strong, particularly in
such countries, as Greece, where the horizontal and vertical dismember
ment causes great variety of coasts.
In 1978, I.G.U. (International Geographic Union) decided the establish
ment of Sub - Commission on Geomorphology of river and coastal plains.
The Laboratory of Photogranmetry, participates in the activities of the
above Sub - Catmission from the point of photograrrmetric applications
(Tsakiri - Strati M., 1981, Patmios E., 1981 ).
In seme cases, there is a high interest in the study of coasts, espe
cially when besides natural progress, other important evolutions have
given peculiarity to the area.
A study that has already begun in the Laboratory of Photogrammetry re
fers to such a case, in relation with Athos peninsula, in Chalkidiki,
in Northern Greece.
The particular interest ccmes frem the fact that a large number of va
rious monasteries with enormous historic and cultural importance exist
in this peninsula and especially in its coasts.
In this paper, which concerns the first part of a more general study
about: coasts,a photointerpretation study is presented and commented and
general directions for further research are touched.
2. PHOTOINTERPRETATION STUDY
This includes the following:
2.1 General photointerpretation of the whole peninsula with mirror
stereoscope Wild ST4, with or without magnifying diopters, based on
airphotographs in scale 1:60,000 (Fig.2,3). Twelve airphotographs were
totally used in 4 strips, each strip consisting of 3 airphotos. Photo
mosaic was formed, based on radial airtriangulation principles (Fig.1)
