Editor's Note

This volume is a compilation of papers submitted to the International Society for 
Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS), Commission IV Workshop on Mapping and 
Environmental Applications of GIS Data sponsored by Working Group IV/1 on GIS Data and 
Applications. The workshop was conducted at the University of Wisconsin-Madison under the 
leadership of WG IV/1 members, Workshop Director Greg Allord of the U.S. Geological 
Survey and Co-Director Loey Knapp of IBM Corporation. The volume represents WG IV/1 
objectives of assessing state-of-the-art applications of geographic information systems (GIS) 
data in mapping and the environment. 
The 23 papers included were organized into five sessions listed in the table of contents and 
forming the sections of this volume. The presented papers indicate the diversity of data and 
applications topics which form the core of the activities of WG IV/1. The authors are to be 
commended for their research and applications efforts and their willingness to share their 
findings with the conference attendees and the ISPRS community through these Proceedings.
