SATELLITES IMAGES OF VERY HIGH RESOLUTION ON THE STUDY 
OF MONUMENTS AND HISTORICAL CENTERS AND THEIR WIDE SURROUNDINGS

ABSTRACT 
This paper concerns the central area of Thessaloniki city, which includes a large number of significant monuments of different kind, 
time, size, ruin etc. Satellite images of very high resolution (IKONOS satellite) are being used for this study. The following subjects 
are involved: the wide surroundings of the monuments and historic centers, urban network, land uses, the “neighborhood” of the 
monuments, the relation between “old” and “new”. 
Our aim is to search through the possibilities of visual interpretation on the study of satellite images of very high resolution in order 
to acquire useful information to show off and protect the monuments which are included in a large city, continuously being 
developed, as it happens with Thessaloniki city. 
1. INTRODUCTION 
À multifarious study of monuments and historical centers 
(cultural features in general) is particularly important for the 
cultural features themselves and also for the development of 
their wide surroundings. 
Several scientific areas that can contribute to this study are 
systematically used. 
Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and Geoinformation Systems 
are effective valuable tools for relative qualitative and metric 
studies. [Bartolotta M. et al, 2000]. 
Terrestial takings, aerial photographs and satellite data are 
suitably used, according to the case. 
Scientific and technologic advances in Photogrammetry and 
Remote Sensing are rapid. However, it is very important that 
every progress in methods, instrumentation and acquired data 
should be tested and evaluated from the point of application 
capabilities on the study of monuments and historical centers 
[Boehler W., 1999, Patmios E., 2000]. 
This paper concerns exploration of application capabilities of 
IKONOS satellite imagery on the study of monuments 
(included in urban areas) with their wide surroundings, as it 
happens with the city of Thessaloniki in Northern Greece. 
2. STUDY OF MONUMENTS IN THEIR 
WIDE SURROUNDINGS 
Thesaloniki extends at almost level area along the coast and 
continues towards the interiors, where moderate relief appears. 
General information (basic topographic data) for the city are 
presented in Fig. 1, including contours, main drainage and the 
urban area. 
The city includes a large number of monuments-cultural 
features, especially in its central part. These monuments are of 
different kind, time, size, ruin, etc. 
Searching through the bibliography, we became familiar with 
the monuments. From the study also came out that there are 
many kinds of monuments in the central part of Thessaloniki as 
prehistoric, byzantine fortress, ottoman monuments, christian 
churches, neoclassical buildings etc. [Papagiannopoulos A., 
1983, Patmios E., 1993]. 
Field check followed, on the base of relevant localization map 
sketch Fig. 2, which includes the monuments we focused on. 
The used satellite data were hardcopy images of IKONOS 
satellite in scales 1: 5,000 and 1:2,500. These are 
CARTERRA™ GEO 1-PSM (one-meter  Pan-Sharpened 
Multispectral), that combines the spatial content of the 1-meter 
panchromatic data with the spectral content of the 4-meter 
multispectral data [Gerlach F., 2000]. 
Visual interpretation was done for the smaller scale at first. On a 
suitable overlay we recorded data about monuments and their 
wide surroundings. Multiple useful information resulted, 
concerning: urban network, built-up squares, streets of different 
order, sidewalks, rows of trees, inhabited areas, lawns, internal 
areas, traffic, particular uses etc.
