ON
PHOTOGRAMMETRY IN INDIA
SUBMITTED TO THE NINTH INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS
OF PHOTOGRAMMETRY, LONDON, 1960
Introduction. — During the period under report Photogrammetry in Survey of India has made
considerable progress and is expected to be given further impetus in the future years to come. Classi-
cal and Arundel methods of Survey are slowly giving way to this modern technique and the change-
over has been fully justified by the results achieved so far.
Recently we have switched over to the metric system, for all our national surveys. Only in
certain cases, to meet some special demands, we still carry out surveys on F.P. system.
Organization and Equipment.—Two Officers have had a 12 months' training at the I.T.C.
for Aerial Surveys, at Delft, Holland, under the U.N.T.A.A. fellowships and returned home on com-
pletion of the course in September, 1957. One more Officer under the same scheme is now at Delft
for a year's training course in Photogrammetry.
The initial aim is to have four Photogrammetric Units in the Survey of India. Three of these
have started functioning, two of which are productive units and the third is working on a training-
cum-productive schedule. The fourth unit is also expected to start work shortly. The equipment
for all the four units has been received and a part of it is yet to be installed. Each Unit will ulti-
mately have the following equipment :—

In addition, there are 3 Multiplex instruments ( 7 Projectors each ) and two Zeiss SEG V Recti-
fiers.
The equipment so far obtained has been got mainly under U.N.T.A.A. and U.S. Technical
Co-operation Schemes.
Aerial Photography.—The Indian Air Force in close liaison with Survey of India is primarily
responsible for carrying out the Aerial Photography. When the demands for Aerial Photography
are heavy, the Air Survey Company of India ( Private ) Limited, Dum Dum, West Bengal also does
the job under contract with the Government of India. This Company has a Multiplex equipment
and carries out some medium and large scale surveys by photogrammetrie method.
In addition to the Survey of India, other Departments using Aerial Photography for studies,
are the Geological Survey of India, Oil & Natural Gas Commission, Damodar Valley and other project
organizations. The activities of these Departments are very limited and are confined to their special
fields of work. Photogrammetry is taught in a few Universities as part of a wide course in Engineer-
ing and Surveying.
