In the input stage, we are interested in a variety of types of
images that differ in content, resolution, and scale. Type refers to
the means by which the imagery is obtained--conventional photo, infrared,
etc. Content means the specific nature of the material photographed or
sensed, that is, terrain, transportation networks, and such facilities
as ports, harbors, and industrial centers. Resolution refers to the
quality of the photograph. For example, conventional black-and-white
photography may vary from good quality to degraded quality.
In research on the system Operations, effort is directed to the man
himself, and how the capacities he brings to the job impinge upon his
performance. We are concerned with his interests, his abilities and his
experiences. We are very much interested in the instructions he gets to
do the job and the search techniques he employs. Is he asked to engage
in direct search, that is, to locate a site from among a large body of
photographs, or is he asked to make a comparative search looking for
