The regional-geographic airphoto evaluation in Germany

This report is showing the treatment of the regional-geographic research-work 
by airphotos in Germany since 1930. The author reminds at the two big airphoto 
collections for geographic interpretation in Germany; first at the airphoto 
archives of the Berlin Society of Geography, which got lost during the war and 
which was intended for worldwide research, secondly the German airphoto 
archives of the "Institut für Landeskunde'' (Institute of Regional Geography on 
Germany) which is partly kept, and still disposed for regional-geographic inter- 
pretation and oberservance of changes in cultivated country. 
The modern development of the airphoto-archives in the "Institut für Landes- 
kunde' is discussed as well as the documentation of the airphoto contents in 
Hollerith keycards and airphoto evaluation sheets; the compilation of an key 
catalogue might be added, which is divided in a regional and a systematic part. 
It is reported about the different endeavours in Germany to find out a common 
airphoto reading key; the result was the perception that there is no key for 
recognition and understanding of airphoto-contents which is as intelligible as 
the map reading key (legend); and that could not be expected. 
Research charges and single studies of airphoto interpretation in Germany 
during and after the war are here compiled. Some studies, even not well 
known are mentioned. 
The airphoto interpretation in regional geographic research of today includes 
studies of all kinds of geo-sciences: so as geomorphology, geology, research 
of soils and soil erosion, coastal research, vegetation research, protection of 
nature, forestry, mining, town and country planning. 
Now-a-days in Germany it is a special task to convince the leading offices of 
administration,planning and economics about the advantages of airphoto-inter- 
pretation in regional geographic research.
