1. Introduction
Photographs taken of the earth's surface from satellites
with flying heights of 200...400 km have for about 10 years
been the subject of manifeld theoretical and practical studies
in photogrammetry. If one succeeds in producing photographs
with the required characteristics, a prerequisite will be
fulfilled for accelerating the cartographic work on a
world-wide basis and possibly also for reducing costs.
Which are the characteristics to be satisfied by photogram-
pictures of the earth's gurface taken from space? metric
They concern especially
- geometric accuracy according to the standards of photogram-
metry
high resolution
- areal coverage with stereoscopic overlap
production of the photographs in an acceptable period
at acceptable costs
Which are the advantages aimed at by the use of cosmic
photogrammetric pictures?
A stereopair covers a very large area compared with photo-
graphs taken from aircraft. That is, less control points and
orientation processes are required in the plotting machines
for compilation.
