ABSTRACT
The objective of the present study is to assess the use of small format normal colors aerial photographs
(35 mm) to ANALYZE the socio cultural patters of land use in a small area of the Metropolitan Region
of Curitiba. The study area is located at border of the Municipality of Piraquara with the Municipality of
Pinhais in the Metropolitan Region of Curitiba. This area has the characteristics of fringe of cities in the
Third World. In recent years it has suffered the impact of rapid population growth, forming a typical
pattern or residential structure of single family of low income, that caused damages to the natural
resources. The Iguaçu River, main source of fresh water to Curitiba has received small amounts of
pollution from this settlements of population of low socio cultural level. The study method is based on
Chanond and Leekbhai (1986), that used small format aerial photographs (35 mm) to study urban areas of
Bangkok. The technique is a visual interpretation of aerial photographs (35 mm), to map the land use
pattern. The results were also checked by a field work and with other statistical dates that were available.
