ABSTRACT
Irrigated areas are an important part of the agricultural infrastructure of Mexico. In the state of Taumalipas the
irrigation districts of 025 "Bajo Rio San Juan", 026 "Bajo Rio Bravo" and 086 "Soto La Marina" are the most
important ones because of their characteristics and strategic location close to the border with the USA.
Recently operation of the irrigation districts was transferred to the users. This implies the revision and
conversion to modern management tools such as geographic information systems for the inventorying,
automated management, assessment and monitoring of irrigation systems. The techniques for evaluation of
the irrigation and drainage networks as well as conservation practices and works are based on geographic
information systems, a powerful tool for spatially referenced information. I use high resolution satellite
images to detect vegetative growth in canals and drainages. For inventorying and evaluation in canals and
drainages I use a global positioner (GPS). For spatial analysis I utilize ARC-INFO and MULTISCOPE-
ERDAS for digital image processing.
