PREFACE
The International Society of Photogrammetry was founded in 1910. In 1980, after seventy
years functioning under its original name, the Society added remote sensing to its name,
henceforth becoming - The International Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing -
ISPRS. This new name placed the ISPRS in pace, and in space, with the modern remote
sensing and information system technology.
After the 1992 Rio-Conference, the ISPRS promoted another change in the Society when in
October 1992, in Stresa, Italy the Commission VII of the ISPRS formerly known as
"Commission VII - Interpretation of Photographic and Remote Sensing Data" became
Commission VII - Resource and Environmental Monitoring. The newborn Commission VII
was reestablished with a broader environment/resource scope, (i.e., terrestrial ecosystems, land
degradation, desertification, hazardous waste, pollution, coastal zone, human settlements,
global monitoring). Today's Commission VII embraces ten working groups.
Personally, I believe that the modification of Commission VII was a substantive move of the
technical scientific society toward the society in general After two years of the Rio-
Conference 1992, I feel rewarded to organize the International Symposium on Resource and
Environmental Monitoring - ECO-RIO'94 as a response of the international scientific
community to the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development - UNCED
1992. In the other hand, remote sensing specialists and organizations responded magnifically
and in Rio from September 26 through 30, they will have the opportunity to present their
activities for environmental and resources monitoring.
ECO-RIO'94 has been organized by the ISPRS-Commission VII in cooperation with Brazil's
National Institute of Space Research, INPE and the Brazilian Society of Photogrammetry,
Geodesy and Remote Sensing, SBC. The ECO-RIO'1994 has been supported by FINEP
(Brazilian Science and Technology Financing Agency) PETROBRAS (Brazilian Oil
Company) NORTHERN TELECOM, RADARSAT, PCI (Canada), WOOLPERT (USA),
ESA - European Space Agency, CNES - Centre National D'Etudes Espaciales (France), IBGE
(Brazilian Geography and Statistics Institute), FAPERJ (Rio de Janeiro Foundation for Support
of Science and Technology), AEB (Brazilian Space Agency), FAPESP (Sao Paulo Foundation
for Science and Technology) and CNPq (Brazilian Science Foundation for Science and
Technology).
The collection of abstracts published herein are related to the papers of authors who did not
submit the full paper on the due deadline. Therefore, this publication is in addition to the
compromise of ISPRS-Commission VII with the authors participants of the ECO-RIO 1994.
