ABSTRACT
As some of European countries in transition, Hungary executes a massive, mid term land reform via the
privatisation process having serious impact especially on the rural areas. Over the recent 7 millions
registered land and property items, 1.5 millions new parcels are estimated to be established in two years,
having effect on 3 millions changes in property ownership. Due to the implementation of the
Compensation Acts, the average field size in the intensively cultivated agricultural areas has been
reduced by 90% which doesn't meet the requirements of the optimal family farmership. Based on the
country's 150 years long tradition in land registration and heritage in cadastral mapping, first the
infrastructure development for the computerized multipurpose cadastre system had to be established. The
highlights and priorities of the already running, 4-year IT development in 134 land offices (supported by
the CEC) and the upgrade of the GIS and Remote Sensing laboratories in the associated R+D institute
FOMI are shortly mentioned. Underlining the importance of the related education and training, special
emphasis is given for issues like standardisation and data quality policies. The presentation focuses on
the approved domestic and international agriculture-and environment-oriented monitoring programmes
launched paving the way to find harmonized solutions with the rest of Europe. The initial results of the
application of GIS based approach in land consolidation and use of digital photographer and orthophoto-
maps in rural mapping is also discussed.
