ABSTRACT
The building of huge hydroelectrical power stations in the Amazon region has caused major environmental
impacts on the forests, especially in the neighbourhood of those power lines for antropie activity starts along
those maintenance roads opened during the building of the lines.
The purpose of this contribution is the identification of the transformations which operated in the forest, using
LANDSAT-TM digital images, gathered in the period of 1984 - 1991, from two different areas cut by a single
power line which links Balbina hydroelectric power station to the city of Manaus.
Those digital images were classified by means of a Maximum-likelihood test and the Normalized Difference
Vegetation Index (NDVI), in order to generate two distinct maps (the 1984 and 1991 maps), showing some
dynamic modifications.
