ABSTRACT 
A low cost system to monitor the environmental impacts of programs to increase commercial agriculture 
productivity on small plots is being developed by the Government of Malawi. The plan involves and life, 
assisting in the capacity to collect and analyze geo-referenced data by a number of government ministries 
and departments and will use a combination of data collection methods including field surveys, 
videography, large scale aerial photography and satellite data. Geographic information system technology 
will be used to, compile store and analyze the data. The effort is being supported through a cooperative 
agreement with two US Universities by the US Agency for International Development.
