ABSTRACT
Research is a vital requirement for the well being of any professional field.
Results are published to the benefit of every country. A feature of our era is
a continuously increasing quantity of published material. Yet, the capacity of
readers is limited. As an outcome, previous publications are often not re-
ferenced and considered when preparing a new paper. Aside of being a waste of
efforts and resources, the objective of publishing may be questioned if the
content is not read nor digested.
The paper analyses trends of this phenomenon whilst touching upon the inter-
relation of periodicals with bibliography and technical dictionary. Feasible
international solutions for all three components for the foreseeable future
are outlined whilst advocating co-operation between ISPRS, IAG, ICA and FIG.
1. Definition of Headline

Science comprehends any knowledge attained through research, through literature,
and through education. In this paper I intend to exclude the latter part of this
definition. The objectives of communication are to exchange information. Dif-
ferent modes are applied to communicate. Hereinafter, I will restrict myself
to periodicals, to reports, and to proceedings of conferences. Finally, sur-
veying and mapping is used as a synonym for the broad field covered by the sis-
ter societies, the International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing
(ISPRS), the International Association of Geodesy (IAG), the International As-
sociation of Cartography (ICA), and the International Federation of Surveyors
(FIG). Thus the scope of this paper is to enhance futureminded considerations
on exchange of information on the grounds of research and literature whilst fo-
cussing the fields covered by the sister societies IAG, ICA, ISPRS and FIG.
The following are personal ideas and do not necessarily represent the offical
views of ISPRS.
