The International Society for Photogrammetry was founded 1910 in Wien, Austria,
by the late Prof.Dr.Dolezal. It was renamed to International Society for Photo-
grammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS) in 1980. Presently, 68 countries are
members of ISPRS. Congresses are held every four years, the last one in Ham-
burg 1980, and the following one in Rio de Janeiro 1984. The scientific work
within ISPRS is accomplished by seven Commissions. The Federal Republic of
Germany is entrusted with the responsibility for Commission VI for the term
1980 = 1984. Each Commission helds a Symposium in between two Congresses to
prepare this conference. Proceedings of Congresses and Symposia are pub-
lished in the 'International Archive of Photogrammetry!.
The Symposium 1982 of Commission VI was attended by 45 scientists from 21
countries of all continents. 56 contributions from authors originating from
16 countries were presented.
Commission VI is assigned by the Statute ISPRS to cover eight subjects. Their
state of affairs is given in the respective parts of these proceedings. We
did not have any paper or report on the assignments 'History' and 'Economics'.
Dr. Blachut (Canada) and a team of most distinguished scholars are pledged
in Working Group VI -2 to prepare the book entitled : " Photogrammetry -
Historical Review of Methods and Instruments " . This unique work is scheduled
to be completed for the Rio Congress. We owe gratitude to Dr.Blachut for his
enthusiastic and energetic engagement as chief editor of the book.
Economy of photogrammetry and remote sensing is quite a complex subject. The
only mode for achieving something reasonable seems to be tackling the problem
as is done by a Working Group of the European Organisation for Experimental
Research (OEEPE) chaired by Prof.Jerie of ITC, Netherlands. Commission VI
does not intend to duplicate efforts, but sincerely hopes that this WG will
produce results soon, We invited Prof.Jerie to deliver a report on the state
of affairs
Some words should be added on the topic for the Keynote Address. Nowadays,
microfiches have a continuously increasing significance. They are considered
as à tool for more efficiency in periodicals, and for the output of an infor-
mation retrieval system. Both items are of considerable concern to Commission
VI. We thought it feasible to provide updated and latest information on the
present state of microfiches. Therefore, we selected this topic for the Key-
note Address. We are grateful to Douglas Glendinning for having taken the
burden to prepare the paper.
I have the sad duty to recall that two most distinguished colleagues with
international reputation passed away recently. Dr. Bernard DUBUISSON
from Paris, France, was a most energetic photogrammetrist having contributed
for some lo years novel ideas to the development of our field. He was an
author on the book on History. Dr. Hans FORAMITTI from Wien was an
austrian architect having engaged himself with enthusiasm for the application
of photogrammetry in architecture. He was the first professional to pave the
fundamentals for Standards of Competence in a subfield of ISPRS. His accomp-
lishments have been endorsed internationally by CIPA. At the Symposium, the
audience raised for a minute of silence to honour both distinguished
colleagues,
Jurgen Hothmer,
President,
Commission VI ISPRS
