INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY FOR PHOTOGRAMMETRY AND REMOTE SENSING
Commission VI
Symposium held in Mainz, FR Germany, 22 - 25 September 1982

CONSIDERATIONS ON DELIVERING NATIONAL
REPORTS AT ISPRS CONGRESSES
Prof.Dr. Jürgen Hothmer
President, Commission VI
Fachhochschule Mainz, FR Germany
ABSTRACT
Some people estimate that National Reports are hardly read, and that datas
contained therein are hardly used. If this is so, abandoning of National
Reports could be considered.
On the other hand, when maintaining National Reports it may be feasible to
have a standardized presentation to facilitate reading. Therefore, guidelines
are presented.

1. Basis and Objectives
The Statute of ISPRS denotes in paragraph 1 that the Society is devoted to the
development of international cooperation for the advancement of photogrammetry
and remote sensing. To achieve the aims, the Society shall hold international
Congresses at regular intervals, and shall ensure the wide international circu-
lation of the records of these Congresses by the publication of the Inter-
national ARCHIVES of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing.
For some decades it has been in use to include also National Reports in the
ARCHIVES, although there is no proper definition as yet of this type of publi-
cation. Nevertheless, there should be no doubt that National Reports are a
tool to promote international cooperation.
2. Present State

An evaluation of the last Congress Hamburg 1980 shows:
+ 21 Member Countries out of 57 presented National Reports;
+ there was a late delivering of 4 Reports; consequently, 17 National Reports
are included in the ARCHIVES and are thus available for literature references;.
+ the Reports vary considerably with respect to intrinsic value of information
and to content;
+ the shortest Report has 5 pages and the longest 49 with an average of 18 pages;
+ literature references are included in 13 Reports with in between 1 and 16
pages, with an average of 7 pages; i
+ extensive lists of addresses are included in 2 Reports with 7 pages each. -
