ABSTRACT
The impact of Microfiche is examined in the context of Micrographics general-
sp
ly and specific examples of the potential of Microfiche is presented for dis-
cussion against a backdrop of Micrographic equipment.
INTRODUCTION
I remember once reading a 'Peanuts' cartoon where sitting dejectedly under
a tree Peanuts made the statement to a friend:
"You reap what you sow, you get out of life exactly what you
put into it - personally I'd like to see a little more margin
for error".
I agree! but my appearance here today is not because I'm the cleverest
person in the world concerning the use of microfilm and an expert in its
technology - It began, I assume because of the Hamburg Congress of the In-
ternational Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing.
I chose then, as part of Working Group IV-5 report, to demonstrate the cap-
ture of a world survey of orthophotomaps using microfiche. No microfilming
expert would be at all surprised at that, but the people in Hamburg were,
for not only was the Report misplaced but so indeed were the 2000 micro-
fiche supplements.
Today, I may well be reaping the result of what seed was sown at that time.
I am delighted to be at your Symposium and honoured to take part in its
discussions. I hope, like 'Peanuts' that there is an allowable margin of
error in all that I contribute.
Part of my daily vocation includes the responsibility of assisting the over-
all management of the State Microfilm Bureau, in Perth, Western Australia.
The Bureau has been established some 10 years and contains an adequate se-
lection of equipment to service the needs of Government Departments. Micro-
filming completed includes some interesting dynamic applications besides
a range of work carried out for either reducing storage problems or aiding
the security of data.
It may seem somewhat strange to find the control of such a Bureau emanat-
ing from a Mapping authority but it must be further realised that in a
State Government the largest photographic laboratory will invariably be
that created to support aerial photography and its ancillary products, plus
the photo mechanical needs of cartography.
