Paper of controversial character presents remarks concerning Standards of Com-
petence for Photogeologists. General idea which introduce how the Standards of
Competence could be designed for Photogeologists is discussed. The consideration
who should be responsible for preparation of the standards and what kind of pho-
togeological personnel are necessary are presented. Proposition of outline of
syllabi is also marked. Comments connected with requirements and recommendations
necessary to reach the minimum level of competence for photogeologists are in-
cluded.
1. Preface
After seven years of activity of joint Working Groups of International Federation
of Surveyors (FIG) and International Hydrographic Organisation (IHO) the Interna-
tional Advisory Board (half nominated by the IHO and half by FIG) was created.
This Board approved the "Standards of Competence for Hydrographic Surveyors"
(1) - published by International Hydrographic Bureau (Monaco) in 1978 first edi-
tion and in 1981 second edition. Therefore in my opinion these publications should
be very useful in the IRPRS Commission VI works on standards of competence for
different categories of photogrammetrists and remote sensors. In my paper cover-
ing standards of competence for photogrammetrists who works for geology the above
mentioned IHB publications will be a pattern which I will try to use for my con-
sideration on the subject.
2. Who should be responsible for preparation of the standards of competence for
photogrammetrists involved in geology works?
It is obvious that international societies which represents photogrammetry and
geology. International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing from one
side and European Geological Societies from the other side. Each Society should
at the beginning set up own working group to develop international standards
of competence within profession of photogrammetrist for geology. After some time,
one year or two, they should set up joint working group for the compilation of
syllabi and courses for educational standards. Such joint working group could
be transformed into International Advisory Board half nominated by the ISPRS
and half by ESG chosen from the persons of known competence worldwide in photo-
grammetry and photogeology.
3. Categories of photogeological personnel
Similar as for hydrographic surveyors (1), three categories of personnel should
be considered for photogrammetrists works for geology (photogeologists):
