STORAGE AND RETRIEVAL OF 1“N DOOR
INFORMATION ON CHEMICAL ENGINEERING
ION THE CHEMICAL INDUSTRY
Reinhold Erb
Hoechst AG, Frankfurt, FR Germany
ABSTRACT
Today special literature for almost every scientific area can be searched by
appropriate devices and telephone networks online in the data bank nearly all
over the world. But for a company one of the most valuable knowledges to be
Stored in a data base is the self-produced know-how. The report explains how
this is to be done within the chemical industry for the area of chemical en-
gineering. Special points are the actuality and the worthiness of storing for
such information material. The report also brings some informations about costs
for implementation and storage. Finally it is intended to show to the partici-
pants some online searches in the TEA-Datenbank of Hoechst AG for chemical en-
gineering at the display.

Still 20 years ago engineers got their task, took it to their desk and calcula-
ted and worked till they got the solution of the problem. But now this is his-
tory and everywhere in the industry you will have all this teamwork for the so-
lution of problems. For all this work in planning, development, procedure and
production information is essential. This is the same in the engineering de-
partments of the chemical industry.

r Figure 1 shows that information for solving a
!

Technicoi Problem problem is divided in the part which is avail-
; T ; able, for instance in the brains of the staff
Ii or own papers. Another part has to be created
Jnforrnation by investigation, and a third part may be avail-
able in any documentation as data collections,
C libraries and data bases.

In Figure 2 I want to point out that the costs
for solution of a problem can be held very low
if quite a big part of information can be made
available by searches in data bases.
