ABSTRACT
The hardware which is required to store information for retrieval
purposes on the one side and to do retrieval for information on
the other side is described. In most cases the information is
collected in large data bases and these are stored in mainframe
computers ("host computers"). An alternative is to store infor-
mation in minicomputers. Nowadays retrieval is performed as man-
machine-dialogue ("online information retrieval"). The types of
terminals which may be used for such retrieval are delineated.
The problem of compatibility between terminals and host computers
is mentioned. Some cost figures are given.

1. Introduction
The term information is used to describe different kinds of infor-
mation, e. qq.
- literature information,
— factual information.
Literature information is secondary information about published
papers, monographs, patents etc. and consists of the bibliographic
data of the primary publications, as well as content data such as
abstracts, descriptors, classification codes.
Factual information is understood to be the qualitative and/or
quantitative description of facts, and is in many cases a compi-
lation of numerical data.
In this paper the emphasis is put on the hardware requirements for
the storage and retrieval of literature information.
