Technical Commission VII 
Foreword 
The 1992 ISPRS Washington Congress established the responsibility of the Commission VII 
for the period 1992-1996. The Commission VII was renamed and reorganized in 
October 1992 in Stresa, Italy. Environment and earth resources were the main topics 
selected for Commission VII, maybe in part influenced by the United Nations Environment 
and Development Meeting organized in 1992. Thereafter, the Commission VII has been 
working through ten Working Groups as follows:

Chair: M.G. Chandrasekhar 
WG7 Hazardous Waste and Environmental Pollution

WG8 Snow, Ice, Ocean and Coastal Zone Monitoring 
Chair: Shintaro Goto 
WG9 Human Settlement 
Chair: Bruce Forster

Two years after the Rio Conference 1992, the ISPRS Commission VII organized the first 
technical scientific meeting related with environment monitoring and resources. The meeting 
named ECO-RIO 1992 attracted 655 scientists from 16 countries. The proceedings of the 
meeting were printed in three volumes with a total of 1106 pages. 
For the Vienna Congress the Commission VII received the submission of 237 papers. The 
successful number of papers has been the result of the intensive work of the Working 
Groups’ chairmen.
