TASK OF EDUCATION AND RESEARCH IN PHOTOGRAMMETRY AND REMOTE SENSING
(Activity report of Working Group V1/7, Period 1984/86)
Sanjib K. Ghosh :
Professor, Photogrammetry, Faculty of Forestry & Geodesy
Laval University, Quebec, GIK 7P4, Canada
ABSTRACT
The major task of ISPRS WG VI—7 is the evaluation of the status of education (in photo-
grammetry and remote sensing) in the world and its further promotion. Special emphasis is to be
given to the situation in the world regions where facilities are particularly insufficient. Collabora-
tion with international sister organizations is vigorously sought. The paper reports on the organi-
zation of the working group, elaborates the tasks accomplished thus far and discusses the activi-
ties planned for the future. Certain orientations in the concept of education in our fields are pre
sented for scrutiny and guidance sought from assembled colleagues.
INTRODUCTION
In accordance with the bye-law 27 of the ISPRS statute, subsequent to the XV Congress of
the ISPRS held at Rio de-Janeiro, Brazil in 1984, the new President of Commission VI (Mrs.
Olayinka Adekoya) asked this author in May 1985 to form a Working Group and act as its chair-
mand for the period 1985—88. The assigned tasks of this working group (ISPRS WG V i—7) are:
1) Promotion and development of Education in Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing particu-
larly in developing countries.
2) Development of training packages and lecture materials for Photogrammetry and Remote
Sensing.
Research may be considered a vital part of education especially at the post-graduate level.
This is also necessary for the development of the professional field. Therefore, the working group
considered the aspect of research as an integral part of education — — the primary task assigned to
it.
Furthermore, it is realized that Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing are two fields of sophis-
ticated activities in the wide area known as surveying & mapping ( S & M). Therefore, with regard
to education and its development, certain sincere and vigorous cooperation with other sister
international societies involved in the allied fields of S & M is necessary. The working group consi--
dered this aspect also as an integral part of the assigned task.
ACTIVITIES AND OBJECTIVES
Realizing the complexities of education and research and considering that a world consensus
in this regard would be very much desirable and also realizing the fact that the task is beyond the
capabilities of one single person, the WG chairman sought assistance from interested international
colleagues, Consequently, after a.long search, two co-chairman were appointed.
1. Prof. Dr. Caesar Voute of the Netherlands for the area of "Development of Training Packages
and Lecture Materials".
2. Prof. Dr. Taichi Oshima of Japan for establishing and continuing the desired links with other
sister societies within the "International Union of Surveying and Mapping"
