We have been applying our methods mainly to ERTS frames of Southern
Bavaria. Therefore one stripe of an ERTS frame showing the region
data and
South of Munich serves as example taken on October 6, 1972.

4.1. ANNOTATION OF SPECTRAL BANDS
oriented
After painful experience with our last system where we used to
guess which spectral band was on which picture and which program
had produced it, we now spent some time on annotation. The pro-
scientist
grammer may now add alphanumerical information of any size and
ments, as
ologist,
ss his
orientation at any place of the picture.
The program which played back the picture of our test area writes
date, time of day, program name at the edge of the picture and
pointing
level
allows changing the spectral band during the 12 minute printing
process by operator command and marks the spectral band at the
line where it changed (fig. 2). Display of the information con
tained in the CCT annotation record is also possible but has not
ic machine
been attempted yet.

4.2. GRIDDING AND SELECTION OF WINDOWS
ast include
After interesting areas have been identified visually, the problem
arises to find their exact location in the tape frame. Therefore
the picture is overlayed by a quadratic grid, which acts as a
coordinate system. Normally a rectangular window is defined, in
ures such
which a specific evaluation is performed. Fig. 3 shows the gridded
image with a window selected.
4.3. GREY LEVEL DISTRIBUTIONS
One of the more useful measurements taken within a window is the
grey level distribution of all spectral bands. It gives an instant
