ESSAIS DE PHOTO-INTERPRETATION 
EN ZONE FORESTIERE OMBROPHILE DU SUD-OUEST 
DE LA COTE D’IVOIRE

Abstract The author intends to give some practical methods of identification he has 
experimented with during his soil surveys in the forest zone of south-west Ivory Coast. The 
following points are discussed: — Morphology - Hydrology - Vegetation - Lithology - Super 
ficial formation. 
The general photographic coverage of Ivory Coast is on a 1 : 50,000 scale. The air-photographs 
of low altitude peneplains covered with forest often appear rather indistinct, mostly due to 
water-saturated atmosphere, although they have been taken during the dry season. Because 
of this lack of clearness, and the fleecy aspect due to an abundant foliage, the relief and the 
nature of the terrain cannot be perceived easily. So, the photo interpretation is difficult and 
liable to errors especially when no ground check is being made. The recent topographic maps 
drawn up after these photographs often appear erroneous for want of a ground control net 
work, difficult to realize owing to the difficult access. 
Résumé L’auteur se propose de fournir quelques procédés pratiques d’identification qu’il 
a expérimentés au cours de ses travaux de prospection pédologique dans le Sud-Ouest forestier 
ivoirien. Il s’agit de: - Morphologie - Hydrologie - Végétation - Lithologie - Formation 
superficielle. 
La couverture générale pour la Côte d’ivoire a été réalisée à l’échelle du 1/50.000e. Les 
photographies aériennes des pénénplaines forestières de basse altitude ont souvent un “rendu 
flou” dû principalement à une atmosphère saturée d’eau, bien qu’elles aient été prises en 
saison sèche. Ce manque de netteté et le recouvrement moutonneux dû à une abondante 
frondaison laissent difficilement percevoir le relief et la nature du terrain. Aussi, la photo 
interprétation est peu aisée et sujette à erreurs, surtout en absence de contrôles sur le terrain. 
Les cartes topographiques récentes établies d’après ces photographies sont souvent erronées 
faute d’un réseau de contrôles térrestres, difficile à réaliser en raison des difficultés de péné 
tration. 
Zusammenfassung Der Verfasser möchte einige praktische Verfahren zur Kenntnis brin 
gen, welche er bei der Auswertung der Luftbilder während seines pedologischen Prospektierens 
in der südwestlichen Waldregion der Elfenbein Küste angewendet hat. Es handelt sich um : 
— Morphologie - Hydrographie - Pflanzenwuchs - Lithologie - Oberflächen Bildungen. 
Die allgemeine Luftbild-Bedeckung der Elfenbein Küste wurde im Masstab 1 : 50.000 aus 
geführt. Die Luftbilder der bewaldeten Fastebenen in geringer Höhenlage sind infolge der 
hohen Luftfeuchtigkeit öfters “trüber”, obwohl sie während der Trockenzeit aufgenommen 
wurden. Dieser Mangel an Scharfe und die bucklige Formgebung der reichen Belaubung 
erschweren das Erkennen des Bodenreliefs und der Bodenbeschaffenheit. Daher ist die Luft 
bild-Interpretation schwierig und Irrtümern unterworfen, besonders dort, wo eine terestrische
