At the formal opening ceremony on 30th August, 
a word of welcome was given by Ir. L. van Zuylen, 
in his capacity as representative of the Netherlands 
Society for Photogrammetry. Thereafter the Sym 
posium was declared open by Professor Dr. W. 
Schermerhorn, Dean of the International Train 
ing Centre for Aerial Survey, Delft. After addresses 
by Major-General R. Ll. Brown, Vice-President 
of the International Society for Photogrammetry 
and by Mr. E. Walter of UNESCO, the following 
Presidential Address was delivered by Professor Dr. 
E. U. de Sitter, Vice-President of Commission 
VII, I.S.P., in the absence of the President, 
Professor Dr. C. H. Edelman.
