declaration of the IEEE 802.11 standard is only the be
ginning for numerous upcoming technologies. The form
of integration in modern, real time capable IP-networks
has to be discussed further.
The TZI has contributed to the standardisation of
service integration and real time transport of A/V infor
mation [Bormann et al., 1998; Bormann, 1998a-c]. Ex
tensive experiences in this area have been made within
the projects MERCI, MECCANO, CONTRABAND as
well as the HSDS project about satellite transmission of
A/V information. First experiences with wireless LANs
have been made also within the project CONTRA
BAND (transmission of A/V information in conferences)

Wrobel [1998] defines typical tasks:
- Discovery of deviation of single objects within a
given number of objects.
- Discovery of dependencies between variables, e. g.
association rules or probability networks.
- Creation of clusters on the basis of given number of
objects.
- Classification and prediction of a number of objects.
An important aspect of KDD/DM is the possibility
to create hypothesis about inter-dependencies within
the data automatically. When activities in the area of
data analysis are manual in the past there is a new di
mension in data analysis coming up with KDD/DM.
The TZI has developed numerous approaches which
contribute to the area KDD/DM. Boronowski [1998],
e. g. proposed a method for the interpretation of mul
tiple time series. With this method it is possible to dis
cover qualitative dependencies automatically. For this
method we developed an extension that allows the user
to use this algorithm with an arbitrary decision tree al
gorithm such as C4.5 [Quinlan, 1993]. Among others,
methods of machine learning and advanced statistics
axe being used.
Wireless Computing Outside of the mobile com
puting area, where questions about the source- and
channel-encoding are dominating, the literature about
the use of IP-networks and RTP for wireless transfer of
real time information is focused on applications in the
military area [Murphy et al., 1997, Gage, 1997, Gage
et al., 1998]. Although the actual discussion within this
publications provides a general proof-of-concept for our
approach, the communication technical solution space
has not been explored in detail. With the development
of wireless LANs (WLANs) increasing its speed, the
Within the project WINSPECT we are developing an
information technological infrastructure, firstly pre
pared with wireless LAN for the inspection processes.
The wearable computer will have numerous sensors (e. g.,
camera, audio-sensor, vibration sensor) collecting data
into one second resolution. In order to transfer the data
for the analysis process to the server, the data has to
be reduced without compromising quality. A new data
mining approach is being used for this purpose. On
the server, the data will be analysed with knowledge
discovery methods in order to find new knowledge aid
in planning the maintenance processes more efficiently
and reducing the overall costs.
The support of wearable computer for data acqui
sition within the maintenance processes displays large
potential. Using this computer for data acquisition is
possible and worth considering, but can squander other
valuable options. The complete significance of this new
hardware technology will be developed if the integration
of this platform in the overall workflow of the enterprise
succeeds. Therefore, it is necessary that additional tech
niques, e. g. wireless communication and tools for anal
ysis and planning be integrated also. When considering
higher abstraction levels (CIM concepts) more poten
tial will be created.
An automatic planning and analysis process of in
spection gives the user options to form a work process
that is more flexible. This aspect is very important for
an application because it is not possible to foresee ev
ery inspection process in detail. Restricted planning is
unrealistic and very often works contra-productive nor
mally. The use of wearable computer offers a kind of hi
erarchical inspection because the inspection is expand
able, dependent on the actual inspection results. The
proposed scenario is a closed process with evolutionary
character because results of the last inspection process
will flow back in the new planning process. The use of
wearable computer is an important link between plan
ning and analysis.
