AS A BINARY MASK TO ISOLATE AREAS OF CHANGE IN THE FOREST CANOPY. The simple 
land cover classification map (a), which portrays non-forested land cover in black, forested areas in light 
| gray and water in medium gray, was derived via maximum likelihood classification of the 19 July 1976 
| LANDSAT digital image. A binary mask of ''0's" for non-forested areas and “1’s” for forested areas 
| was created from this classification map and has been applied cell by cell to 1977 MSS band 7 imagery 
to yield a new display (b). Thus, only those pixels previously classified as “forest” remain. This proce- 
dure eliminates commission errors when delineating changes due to gypsy moth, as changes in agricul-
