vertical axis represents the percentage of 37 cells correctly reclas- 
sified into their one of ten site index classes. The lower curve 
represents the training set accuracy achieved when the classification 
is restricted to the five map-derived variables. The upper curve re- 
presents the improved training set accuracy obtained when five 
variables are selected by stepwise discriminant analysis from among 
nine variables. Note: the total of nine variables was made available 
by adding the four LANDSAT MSS bands to the five map-derived
