analysis. Soils are classified into broad classes only. The
thematic maps produced are to be transferred to a common map
coordinate system. The study started in 1977 and will be com-
pleted by the end of 1979.
2. DATA
The data acquired for the study consist of digital Landsat-2 MSS
data, digital aircraft scanner data, aerial photography, tele-
spectroradiometer data and various measurements in the field.
Two test sites were chosen for intensive analysis: Huittinen was
used for general vegetation-soil relationship research, and Kuhmo
for detailed timber inventory studies. Some details of the vari-
ous data items are summarized in Table 1. The subsequent over-
passes of Landsat data were not used in multitemporal manner, but
in Kuhmo site both frames were needed to avoid cloud problems. The
satellite-, aircraft- and ground data are used, however, in multi-
Stage mode for timber inventory purposes.
