2.2. Comparison of.Landsat imagery and photo maps.
Mahadevpur area.
In order to determine the differences in area estimates by the
two types of maps prepared above, the total project area and
the areas of different cover types and of cultivation were
measured and tabulated below.
Area in Hectares

Photo map Landsat map
Cover type Area Sage Area Sage
Teak types 18450 53% 22727 64%
one and two
Miscellaneous type 6400 18$ 3550 10$
Cultivation 10225 29% 9350 26%
Total 35075 35625
Note: In ideal case the total area figures on both the maps
should be the same but the difference in this case may be due to
imperfect drawing of project area boundaries on small scale imagery
and also due to reduction of photo map from 1:25.000 to 1:250.000.

The above figures reveal that:
(i) The cultivation areas on both the mpas show a small
difference.
(ii) The total vegetated areas on both the maps show very
small difference.
In case of Teak forests a significant difference in the area
estimation from the two sources has been observed. The teak
forests deliniated on the landsat imagery overlaps adjacent
forest types particularly small patches of poor miscellaneous
forests and is therefore over represented. The reason may be the
similar reflectance characteristics of teak forests and that of
poor miscellaneous deciduous forests. The teak forests at the
time of imposure were also completely leafless. Less area figures
of cultivation on landsat map may be due to interpretation of
some fellow lands having some tree and slowly growth as teak
forests.
Gudem forests area:
In this case the comparison of areas under different cover types
on Landsat imagery (B*W) map and false colour imagery map was
made with map prepared by ground methods.
