Image quality. Atmospheric and various technical factors
stipulate differences in the image quality, especially in
tonal contrasts. These differences are sometimes bigger
than between imagery in different spectral bands. A good
example shows the comparison of the presented high quality
Scanogram and the adjacent eastern ones (1289-08421 and
1371-08423), which show low tonal contrasts and display
a low level of information.
All these factors may result in different interpretations.
To an experienced geologist, who is aware that multiple
interpretation is possible in any kind of investigation,
this fact is only natural and expected.
THE RUPTURAL FABRIC
A thematic map of fractures, produced as mentioned above,
presents a very well developed ruptural fabric. There are
two conspicuous systems: : NW-SE and NE-SW, with a possible
weak N-S system and numerous fractures which cannot be
included either in these or other systems. (Fig. 2)
The NW-SE oriented system forms a conspicuous Skopje-Strumica
zone (1; numbers in brackets refer to Figs. 2 end 5). In
other parts of the SR of Macedonia only single fractures
of this system are seen. The main fault in the Skopje-Stru-
mica zone controls the course of the Vardar river from
Skopje to Valandovo, about 140 km in length. It is
accompanied toward NE by a number of parallel faults
- Kriva Lakavica graben (2), Stip-Strumica and boundaries
of the Strumica depression (3), faults toward Kratovo
and Plaëkovica (4), etc. In the Skopje domain these faults
bound on the Karadag Mt.(5) toward the Skopje depression.
Along the faults of this system numerous grabens are
formed; the most impressive are the Skopje (6), Kriva
Lakavica (2) and Strumica (3) grabens. To the south, faults
of this system are noteworthy from the line Debar-Bitola.
