THE USE OF LANDSAT IMAGES IN OIL EXPLORATION
IN URFA REGION, TURKEY
OZCAN OZMUMCU
Turkish Petroleum Corp.
Ankara, Turkey
Abstract
The aim of this study is to investigate whether the Landsat images
will add more information to our existing knowledge of petroleum
exploration in the avea under study. It has been planned that this aim will
be achieved by interpreting the geological features of Landsat images and
correlating them with up-to-date data.
The implications of the preliminary geological interpretation of the
Urfa Region. SE Turkey, through Landsat images discussed. These
images were taken from Earth Resources Technological Satellite in
August 1975.
The detection of structural lineaments has been quite successful,
therefore a fracture trace analysis can be used for regional evaluation.
However this approach might be inadequate for oil exploration. More
sophisticated techniques should improve the interpretation.
