sensor
1.2 High-resolution sensor
A high-resolution sensor of 5.07 M-pixel has replaced the
former sensor type. The resolution is today 2560 px :
1920 px. The pixel size is 3.4 microns; size of the CCD
array is diagonal 11 mm. It is a type 2/3" chip. The
sensor provides excellent basic characteristics, such as
saturation signal level, sensitivity and smear. The device
provides an 8x speed readout mode output that allows 30
frames per second readout for image verification with an
LCD finder, auto focus control and auto-exposure
control. Also a 2x speed mode that provides a double
frame rate 1.25-million pixel mode is new for this kind of
sensors. The readout modes include: Progressive scan
output mode that allows high-speed shutter operation,
additive mode that provides high sensitivity and a wide
dynamic range. The chip achieves photographic quality
to support imaging objects under a wide range of
conditions.
1.3 RDC raw data format
Saving image data to storage media is done in a
company's own developed format. This format is named
RDC and stores all the image data without any loss of
information as the sensor records it. The format has a 4k
header, which is suitable for additional image
information like camera settings during the exposure and
calibration data, the factory settings after field
calibration. The images are converted from the raw data
format to formats like JPG or TIFF with the dImage
software. Information about white balance and others are
incoming from the above mentioned file header and are
automatically added to the conversion process. In case of
forensic applications the storage of the original image is
very important for accepting digital images as a
document of evidence.
2. SOFTWARE FOR IMAGE
ADMINISTRATION
With risen claims of customers to handling, quality and
support, the integration of a camera in a computer
environment gets more and more important. On today's
photo market there are different software tools and
applications that support the administration of digital
cameras and image data. In most cases the offered
camera-software is a standard application that is not
developed by the camera manufacturer. The result is a
leak of collaboration between the camera and the offered
software. Rollei Fototechnic delivers a software package
developed in the companies software department, which
controls in an excellent manner the device functions.
The image administration tool, which is supplied with
every camera of the Rollei d-Series, is called dImage.
The functionality includes loading the exposures from the
camera, creating an overview of all pictures, manipulate
the image data and establish a remote control of the
camera.

2.1 Image acquisition
Rollei dIimage supports three different ways to get the
photos from your camera into the computer. First of all
you can take the storage medium out of the camera and
read it out on your PC. The second way is to connect the
camera with an SCSI-wire to a computer and let dImage
readout the data from the camera. Another interesting
possibility is the remote control of a digital camera. With
an SCSI- or parallel port cable there is established a
connection between camera computer. Afterwards you're
able to control any functions the camera offers. There is
no difference in the available range of functions to the
manual operation of the camera. While using the remote
control of dimage it is also possible to interchange any
data with the camera and to control the camera settings
and the chosen motif by a small thumbnail. If the camera
is triggered off by a mouse click dimage manages to
download the picture from the camera. The graphical
data set is saved as a RDC-file and shown on the monitor
ready for optimisation and image manipulation.
