The upper part of the example contains the bibliographic data, such as author,
title, number of pages, etc. The content is given by field, keywords, and ab-
stract. The geographic keywords and, for Germany, the numbers of the topo-
graphic maps 1 : 25 000 are significan means of retrieval. The number of
citations increases by about 50,000 anually.
On-line data banks
GEOLINE is the first data bank for geosciences, mining, and water management
to be implemented by GEOFIZ at INKA in Karlsruhe (INKA stands for Informa-
tion Center, Karlsruhe). At the present time only a test pool is available.
Citations for all the years since 1970 will have been made accessible by the
end of 1982. The data bank will then contain 350,000 citations from the world-
wide literature.
GEOLINE is accessible to users with their own on-line terminals via telephone
lines. Euronet, or Datex P. The INKA computer in Karlsruhe was selected as
host computer because the user of GEOLINE has the possibility of switching
to other data banks within the information system.
The fields of remote sensing and photogrammetry are partly covered by
GEOLINE. Data on the technical side of remote sensing and photogrammetry
are contained in the data banks Dokumentation Maschinenbau und Fertigungs-
verfahren (DOMA), Dokumentation Elektrotechnik (ZDE) and Dokumentationsring
Elektrotechnik (DRE) of the Information Center for Technology (FIZ 16) or
those of American agencies, National Technical Information Service (NTIS) and
Engineering Information, Inc., New York (COMPENDEX). Basic knowledge in these
fields is available from the PHYS data bank of the Information Center for
. Energy, Physics and Mathematics (FIZ 4).
Physical geography and surveying are documented by the Institute for Applied
Geodesy (IfAG). At present, an online data bank is in preparation in co-
operation with GEOFIZ. It will be available to be public sometime 1984.
Other information services
Besides offering on-line data bases, GEOFIZ provides several other (off-line)
information services (see Fig. 3).
Our off-line services include retrospective bibliographic searches )in all
the available data bases) and standard and individual profiles (from the
data bases of GEOFIZ).
