Requests received by telephone or letter for bibliographic information are 
converted by professionals into a standard form that can be used in search- 
ing the data base. Whether an on-line or off-line search is made, depends on 
the. frequency of the requests made by the user. If the user makes only in- 
frequent use of our services, professional help is necessary in choosing the 
proper data base(s) and in conversion of normal language into a form that 
can be used for the search. If frequent use of the system is envisaged, the 
user, after some training, can have direct access via his own terminal to 
data banks worldwide. Finally, a few words on the periodicals of GEOFIZ. 
GEOLOGICAL literature published in the German speaking region is covered in 
the periodical "Zentralblatt für Geologie und Paläontologie", while the inter- 
national literature on peat and moorlands and that on the Mediterranean Re- 
gion is covered in "Telma" and the "Bibliography on the Meditteranean Region", 
respectively.

Geosciences, Mining and Water Management and the 
Documentation Department of the Federal Institute 
for Geoscience and Natural Resources (BGR). She 
is information scientist and is affiliated with
