MODERNIZATION OF EQUIPMENT
With the ever increasing emphasis on digital equ ipment, Nigeria like other third world coun-
tries, still rely heavily on analogue plotters. It is recognised that, because of the ruggedness and
vate Of maintenance of these equipment, they will continue to be the photogrammetric work-
horse for some time to come especially in developing countries. However, it is necessary that the
existing analogue plotters be modified to incorporate digital readouts and interphases with com-
puters. This will assure accurate and fast data collection and processing. Analytical plotters are
becoming cheaper, and because of their versatility in topographical and non-topographical
applications they are highly recommended. Orthophoto equipment should be acquired for fast
production of maps for land use, engineering and environmental planning purposes.
We recognize however that maintenance constitute a very serious problem in developing
countries, therefore, some form of guarantee for this must be established before modernization
of equipment.
6.3 ESTABLISHMENT OF NATIONAL RESEARCH CENTRES
Establishment of research centres for photogrammetry and remo te sensing is very vital if we
are to acquire the technology of the sciences within a very short time.
A national centre fore remote sensing is a must if we are to take advantage of the applications
in weather and climate monitoring and other application areas mentioned in Section 6.3. This is
so because these areas of application are of National importance. National research centre is also
important because of instability of most governments of third world countries with the attendant
changes in policies and priorities, However, if such national research centres are established the
objectives of such centres will continue to be pursued irrespective of the government in power.
6.4 NEED FOR SELF-RELIANT PRIVATE SURVEY COMPANIES
The present proliferation of mapping companies in Nigeria does not augur well for the growth
of Nigerian mapping industry. Such proliferation stretches the limited available manpower and
does not encourage self-reliance. In order to arrest the situation, the formation of viable and self-
reliant mapping companies out of the existing ones should be encouraged. Such companies
should be given greater government patronage and protection.
7.0 SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION
In this paper, we have reviewed the growth and application of photogrammetry and Remote
Sensing in Nigeria. The importance and indispensability of mapping and survey information in
national development are also highlighted. It has been noted that the present survey and resource
information in the country is grossly inadequate. In order to meet the demand for these informa-
tion, full advantage of the applications of photogrammetry and remote sensing should be taken.
To this end it is suggested that
a) There should be a greater recognition and adequate fu nding, by government, of photo-
grammetric and remo te sensing activities,
b) The present equipment, both in public and private sector should be modernized.
c) Research and manpower development efforts should be intensified.
