(b) Although the original aim of RECTAS was to produce practitioners, many of its
graduates are occupying or have occupied responsible posts as Photogrammetric Lectu-
rers* and researchers here at RECTAS, in service Geographique National, Dakar and also
at Federal Surveys, Lagos. Others are occupying important managerial posts in their
respective countries — in both the public and private sectors of the economy.
(c) RECTAS has also made significant contribution in up-dating of staff by organising
seminars and conferences for other organisations and also by training its own staff.
(d) In the area of Consultancy Services and Research, RECTAS has also made some con-
tributions although it is only a small beginning.
(e) In terms of the future needs in Africa's ma n-power development, RECTAS has for-
mulated a second 5-year development plan 1987— 1991 which although yet to be appro-
ved by its Council, contains elements and features that hold promise for mending the
structural defects in man-power development in Africa not only in Photogrammetry Lut
also in Remote Sensing, Cartography and Aerial Photography.
APPRECIATION:
The modest achievements of RECTAS recorded in this paper bear testimony to signifi-
cant contributions made by the following individuals, groups, organisations and governments
in the pursuit of the Centre's stated objectives over the years.
The present and past students and staff of the Centre for their unparalleled dedication
and discipline by which the Centre has achieved a high success rate in its examinations.
The past Directors of the Centre for their high sense of devotion to duty with which they
pursued relentlessly the objectives of the Centre.
The member states of RECTAS for their financial and technical support for the Centre
without which the Centre's existence would have been Jeopardised. One must single out for
mention the past and present governments representatives on our Governing Council for their
inspired pioneering spirit and their dedication to the success of this Centre as an example of
intergovernmental cooperation.
The government of Switzerland for giving us financial and technical support since the in-
ception of the Centre; the government of Netherlands which through ITC, provided much
needed pioneering technical assistance, the British government through the British Council
for its fellowship to some students of the Centre: and lastly, the Executive Secretary of
UNECA for providing the Centre with a solid foundation for good administration and a right
sense of direction through his Chairmanship of RECTAS Governing Council: all other techni-
cal and logistics support from UNECA is also gratefully acknowledged.
