air pollution has been elaborated by out staff. This method is
widely applied in practice. Further research aims at replacing
false colour photographs with multispectral photographs; we are
also planning to develop a method for surveying deciduous
forests.
Environmental protection has an important place on out list of
research problems* Several issues related to this discipline
have already been mentioned. Complicated problems connected
with preservation of natural environment have to be tackled in
every sphere of economic activity of men. I would like to draw
your attention to the importance of research on the quality of
water and water protection. In this respect the main contribu
tion of our team was research on the influence of heated waters
discharged from industrial plants into natural water bodies.
The technology based on the interpretation of thermal images
taken from aircraft or helicopter elaborated by the staff of
the Institute is now routinely applied. Quantitative analysis
of the influence of heated industrial waters on natural streams
has also been successfully performed. Analog interpretation of
multispectral satellite images of Great lakes region /north
eastern Poland/ has rendered very interesting results* The
works in this field also embrace industrial air pollution,
vegetation damage in the vicinity of industrial plants and high
ly urbanized areas, research on fires and temperature distri
bution in abandoned mines and damps as well as on other pro
blems related to the preservation of the natural environment.
INTERNATIONAL ACTIVITIES OP POLAND IN
THE PIELD OP REMOTE SENSING
Poland’s international activities in the field of remote sen
sing take on several forms. It is understandable, that with the
growth of our centre, the amount of international contacts in
which our side is an active one, sharing experience with part
ners will be increasing. It is also “understandable, that up till
recently we were pursuing such forms of international coopera
tion which enabled our staff to gain knowledge and experience.
Very large number of training programs completed in world lea
ding remote sensing centres is a consequence of this approach.
The members of our staff have undergone training in such lea
ding centres as: Canada Centre for Remote Sensing /Ottawa/,
Eros Data Centre /Siouxs Palls, USA/, Purdue University /Lafa
yette,USA/, ITC /Enschede, Netherlands/, Institute Géographique
National /Prance/, PAO Headquarters /Rome, Italy/. Some of these
training programs resulted in elaboration of remote sensing data
on Polish territory. Senior specialists from our centre have
acquired thorough knowledge on the organization of remote sen
sing centres during short visits to European and North American
organizations. Close cooperation with numerous remote sensing
centres and organizations in several countries is the result of
these visits. The visits paid to Canada and the United States
of America in 1976 and to Sweden in 1977 by our delegation
headed by the President of the Head Office of Geodesy and Carto
graphy are of special significance. Also' the 1977 visits to
Prance and the Netherlands were very fruitful.
