THE APPLICATION OF
PHOTO-INTERPRETIVE TECHNIQUES TO GEOGRAPHICAL
AND PLANNING STUDIES IN CANADA

Abstract Canada, the second largest country in the world in terms of area (3.8 million
sq. mis.) was one of the first with a complete coverage of air photographs, and presently has
sequential coverage available in many areas. It is relatively unstudied from a geographical
viewpoint, thus offering a strong incentive to the vigorous Government Branch of Geographers,
to geographical research in the Universities, and to an increasing acceptance of geographers
and the geographic approach in industry. In this environment, which presents a close to
optimum field for the maximum application of photo-interpretive techniques, the development
of photo-interpretive methods is reviewed, the present use of photo interpretation in geograph
ical and planning studies is examined, and proposed extensions of the use are outlined. In par
ticular, the application of photo interpretation to large scale reconnaissance studies to obtain
widespread preliminary geographical data is considered.
Résumé Le Canada, deuxième plus grand pays du monde au point de vue superficie (3,8
millions de milles carrés) fut l’un des premiers à posséder une couverture photographique
aerienne complète et aura tantôt les couvertures continues disponibles de diverses régions. Il
est du point de vue géographique peu étudié et c’est ce qui donne une puissante impulsion au
département gouvernemental des géographes et aux institutes de géographie des universités;
cela favorise également l’embauche croissante de géographes et les orientations géographiques
dans l’industrie. Dans ces conditions qui constituent un champ d’action optimum à l’utilisation
des techniques d’interprétation photographique, on revise ces dernières, on en examine les
possibilités actuelles d’emploi dans les études géographiques et de planning et on en définit
les extensions requises. On envisage tout spécialement l’application de l’interprétation photo
graphique aux études de reconnaissance à grande échelle pour l’obtention de données pré
liminaires étendues.
Zusammenfassung Kanada, das nach seiner Fläche (3.8 Mill, sq.mls) zweitgrösste Land
der Welt, war eines der ersten Länder mit einer vollständigen Luftbilddeckung und hat heute
in vielen Teilen eine mehrfache Deckung. Kanada ist geographisch relativ wenig untersucht,
so bietet es für die starke Gruppe der in der Regierung tätigen Geographen, für die geogra
phische Forschung an den Iniversitäten und für die in der Industrie in steigendem Masse
tätigen Geographen und angewandte geographische Denkweise einen starken Arbeitsanreiz.
In diesem Raum, der ein optimales Arbeitsfeld für den grösstmöglichen Einsatz der Luftbild-
interpretations-Techniken bietet, ist die Entwicklung der Interpretationsmethoden verfolgt,
die gegenwärtige Verwendung der Photo-Interpretation in geographischen und planerischen
Studien überprüft und eine vorgeschlagene Erweiterung der Verwendung erläutert. Ins
besondere wird über die Anwendung der Photo-Interpretation bei kleinmasstäblichen Über
sichtsuntersuchungen für ausgedehnte vorläufige geographische Unterlagen gesprochen.
To focus this brief paper on essentially geographical interpretation, geo
graphical and planning studies are taken to include those which assess as com
pletely as possible, one or more regional factors such as vegetation, soil or land
use, and to exclude those that by definition and classification are directed to
one restricted use such as aggregate material search, forest inventory of mer
chantable stands, or photo-tectonics. It must be realized, however, that this
eliminates approximately 80% of current Canadian photo interpretation.
