beautiful venue, the lovely weather of Rhodes and mostly to the
extremly careful work prof. J Badekas has done. We all hope that
something really exceptionally useful will finally come out of this
meeting
Having a brief look at the past, we can say that during the
meeting in Krakow the emphasis was on history and something positive
that come out was the endeavour which has not yet completely finished,
in Mains we had a new orientation in information retrieval, in Badayri
the meeting was centered on technical cooperation, and finally in
Rhodes the meeting is focused principally on education.
Comparatively speaking a good propotrion of possible
international patricipants has registered, arrived and is attending the
meeting. This is a vast improvement and a credit to the President of
the Commission. On the other hand it is really a shame that only two out
of ten people responsible- for the WGs, and Intercommission Groups are
here, This is not a new problem, so there is no need to overemphasise
it., but 1 am of the oppimon that when somebody accepts the
responsibility of a WG, one has to attend the Symposium as well.
Since there was little contribution from the WGs the meeting
is concentrated into papers. Altogether 26 papers on education out of
48 registered, some of them invited, were presented and we may say it
was a representative sample of what needed to be discussed. The ratio
is not at all satisfactory and we’ve got to think of it seriously for the
Congress in Washington, because only when one .is determined to be
there does one deserve to be included in the list. As far as WGs are
conserned, f would like to mention some individual suggestions. For
example, talking about the WG on education we can tell from the papers
that there is lot of interest in the field yet there is disinterest by the
WG chairman. So the question right now is, is there a possibility to
combine the activities of WG 2 and 7 into one and to find one
responsible chairman for it?
Something has to be done about Com VI WG 4 on economics,
too, where it was mentioned that there was an extensive expectation
in the field, yet nothing significant came of it, due to the fact that the
chairman is too busy with other activities in a private industry in
Switzerland, and also something has to be done with WG 5 and 6 to
overcome the usual difficulties with French goverment. An other thing
that has to be mentioned here is the fact that today, due to the total
overlap in methods used in Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing,
Cartography and Surveying, for example the use of the same computers,
total stations, digital recording techniques, raster scanning and so on,
there is a great task for an initiative by ISPRS and Com VJ_ to get
together with the representatives of 1USM to do joint work. Maybe in
Washington the representatives of FIG and ICA will do some joint work.
