1974, Enslin and Sullivan produced maps of
the Pointe Monillee Marsh, Michigan, from
medium-scale fcir.
By 1975, U.S.G.S. was mapping wetlands at
a scale of 1:24,000 using seasonal fcir as
reported by Carter and Stewart. By 1979, U.
S.G.S. produced wetland vegetation maps,
7.5 quad sheets of the Tennessee Valley area
on which six vegetative classes and twelve
sub-vegetative classes were shown. Also in
1979, Howland completed the wetland mapping
of the Shelbourne Pond, Vermont area, in
which he tested three types of imagery, con
ventional color, fcir, and color-enhanced
multi-band imagery. He concluded that the
fcir imagery was best after delineating and
classifying sixteen separate and distinct
wetland types
The modern methods of field ecology sur
vey are often difficult, time consuming and
too clostly to apply to wetland delineation
and classification. In particularly fragile
ecosystems, comprehensive biological field
studies can cause far more physical damage
than would an appropriate ground control
program in a small portion of the area and
subsequent imagery analysis.
