INTEGRATED PHOTOGRAMMETRIC SYSTEMS
ISPRS Commission II, Working Group II-6
Interim report

ABSTRACT
The terms of reference of Working Group II-6 concern the concepts and
models for integrated systems, their design and development, study of the
existing systems, performance and reliability, methods and means for sys-
tem evaluation, and the impacts of advanced integrated systems. From the
discussion of the terms, it is apparent that the W.G. domain is broad,
complex and dynamic. The corresponding research and development are gain-
ing in importance, especially concerning the capability of merging
information from different sources, producing information for diverse
users, and effectively exchanging information between the data bases and
other system components in all process stages. Moreover, large scale data
bases and differential mapping capability tend to be among the main
issues.
I INTRODUCTION
The need for a working group on integrated systems emerged from the
recent developments in the area of geo-information technology. These
developments are reflected in the following trends:
- from small, simple systems towards larger, complex systems,
— from hardware to software and thus from analogue to digital,
— from manual to automatic operations,
— from sub-systems to large integrated entities.
Such changes in technology call for systemisation in the problem area,
leading to increasing standardisation, especially of the production lines
and information products.
The new working group (W.G. II-6) has its roots in two former W.G.'s,
namely the W.G. II-1, on analytical and hybrid instrumentation, and W.G.
II-2 on automatic equipment and systems. The terms in the W.G. name
(Integrated Photogrammetric Systems) have the following meaning.
. Integrated: implies unification of parts into a homologous whole;
. Photogrammetric: refers to physics, geometry, methods and means for
imaging by light; extraction, sampling, processing and presentation of
information in analogue and digital domains;
. Systems: concern composed entities exhibiting a structure of parts and
their relationships, which are dominated by the wholeness.
The overall W.G. objectives can be summarised as follows:
- Delimit the W.G. domain, identify the problems in it, and assess the
consequences of introducing integrated systems in real production
environments;
