Economics, Professional Aspects, Education, Periodicals, Terminology, Bibliography, History, International Exchange of Information
Symposium in Mainz, FR Germany, 22-25 September 1982, Session on
MULTILINGUAL DICTIONARY (MLD)

One out of several objectives of the MLD may be quoted: A Multilingual Dictionary
with terms and definitions is most urgently required as an essential software
input for the "ISP Information Retrieval System", allowing that a query, although
placed in just one single language, will retrieve all relevant information
independent on the language of origin. Hence, scientists and researchers, whose
mother tongue or working language is included in the Multilingual Dictionary,
will thus be enabled to work more efficient and more successful - to the be-
nefit of their own country.
A considerable amount of efforts for the past two years has continuously been
put into the project of the Multilingual Dictionary. The emphasis is on having
DEFINITIONS for all terms being in use in our field. After quite some negotiations
with frustrating intermediate results, the present state is favourable:
Work Group Office

Dr. Gerhard LINDIG has engaged himself intensively by elaborating on a feasible
approach for compiling the "ISPRS Multilingual Dictionary on Photogrammetry
and Remote Sensing". As we did not succeed in allocating any outside support,
retired colleagues (Messrs. BELZNER, EBELING and RODDE) agreed to do the ne-
cessary office work on an honorary basis :
Language Editors

Vice Chairmen are responsible for proper wording of terms and definitions in
their mother tongue, and for publishing their language volume. A condition
of ISP is that any language volume must be available, at a moderate price,
to any Member Nation of ISP.
The present status of Vice-Chairmen is:
* Chinese: LI XUZHI, Beijing;
r English: S. WALKER, London;
+ French: H. BONNEVAL, Paris;
+ German: G. LINDIG, Frankfurt;
+ Russian: A. LOBANOV, Moscow;
* Spanish: H. COMESANA and D. DEAGOSTINI, Montevideo.
When compiling the definitions for the MLD, all achievements having been accom-
plished so far in any country should be given due considerations. Therefore,
a list of references having been made known to the President Commission VI
