President ISPRS Doyle (USA): The online demonstrations we saw here today
re really impressive. I wonder what countries have applied so far com-
Participants from five countries reported in the affirmative.
Dr. Proca (Italy), responding to a question on whether the European Space
Agency could provide free access in exchange for ISPRS creating the data
base, states that this subject needs to be investigated.
Dr. Proca (Italy), replying to other questions, says that the ESA - IRS system
does not include graphic output. Full text documentation can be supplied via
ESA = IRS from the United Kingdom.
Ms.Judit Nowak (FR Germany) : The GEOFIZ system is available at the INKA host
in Karlsruhe with free descriptors in any of three languages (German, English
and French). Services include both online access and 'postcard'! search
service.
Dr. Oberhoff (FR Germany) : Keywords are not required for the IBM - STAIRS
retrieval software,
NN: Although NASA, PASCAL and Geoabstracts indicate significant omissions
of photogrammetric data in each system (referring to the paper of ten Haken),
I recommend contacting all three groups (especially Geoabstracts) to see if
it is possible for them to extend their coverage to include all literature
relevant for ISPRS use.
NN : Multiple language entries in an ISPRS file remain a problem. The SUSY
automatic translation system of the University of Saarbrücken may prove to be
adaptable, but progress in this area will be dependant on the compilation of
the multilingual dictionary (see Part 5).
NN : Access to the host computer facility for retrieving data is not a prob-
lem. Most existing systems can be entered via telephone / teletype facilities
anywhere in the world. The single qualification, of course, is the quality
and dependability of the telephone system itself. Although the online demon-
strations used display screens, all further discussions seem to center on
simple telex / teletype equipment. It is not ascertained how many potential
users have access to display screens equipment.
Mr. Tietz (FR Germany) : Availability and use of display screens for public
communication are supposed to grow whenever a country improves both quality
. and capabilities of its telecommunication net. As an example, we expect in
the FR Germany that, within some five years, one million people will pratici-
pate in telecommunication via the telephone using their TV set as display
screen added by a keyboard.
