Full text: Photogrammetry for industry

À
INTRODUCTION
in.1975 Sun Shipbuilding and.Dry Dock Company ("Sun")
participated in a National Shipbuilding Research Program
study which assessed photogrammetry from the viewpoint of
increasing productivity in shipbuilding. Sponsorship and
cost-sharing of the study was by the U.S. Maritime Admini-
stration and Todd Shipyards Corporation, with the latter
providing technical direction to the selected investigator,
"MIFK". Sun's participation was as a “cooperating shipyard”
wherein real shipyard situations were made available to the
investigator.
Investigations within Sun's shipyard included an actual
demonstration survey of a midship section built for the
purpose of jumboizing a RO/RO ship. Measurements on a series
of photographs taken from several different viewing points
allowed the investigator to produce very accurate as-built
dimensions of the midship section. Of primary interest was
the ability to evaluate the midship section as a total
three dimensional body -- a direct result of the fact that
the photogrammetric survey is a three dimensional one, as
will be shown later. Hence, racking and skewing of the midship
section as a whole and parallelism of the transverse sections
was easily determined.
Based partly upon the successful survey of the midship
section, the final report covering the entire project!
