ABSTRACT:
Slovenian topographic system, maintained by Surveying and Mapping Authority of Republic of Slovenia, consists of both maps and
databases. After finishing project of establishment National topographic map at a scale 1: 25,000 in 1999 we are now producing maps
at following scales: 1: 50,000, 1: 100,000 and 1: 250,000. The most important user for printed maps is Ministry of Defence.
Establishment of topographic databases started at beginning of 90-ies with vectorising of topographic map contents. Most of these
data sets are regularly updated and some of them are linked to the institutions responsible for attribute data (road directorate,
environmental agency...). Because initial data source are maps these are not full fledged topographic databases and positional
accuracy is inappropriate for demanding users. Following this situation the establishment of topographical database at large scale and
data acquisition are on going efforts in Slovenia since 1999. Some preliminary development and testing projects were carried out that
served as a guideline for the Project. Aim of the database is to provide digital data for the most important object classes, to provide
linkage between the topographical database and other relevant databases and to give a possibility to produce some standard products
by visualisation of the database. The Project is a compromise between professional solution and resources that are available in
Slovenia. The main sources for data acquisition are stereo images of permanent aerial survey at scale 1: 17,500 and digital orthophoto
map at scale 1: 5,000. The first result of visualisation of the topographical database is Geodetic Template for spatial planning. It is
designed for presentation of local spatial planning documents. Only selected features from the topographical database are used to
create this product, which serves planners and other professional and private users.

Topographic-cartographic system of the Republic of Slovenia is
the official system that consists of spatial data and documents in
numerical and graphic form - analogue maps, digitally
produced maps and topographical databases. Before 1991 only
particular maps and registers were maintained in Slovenia,
while the najority were maintained under former Yugoslav
military service in Belgrade. After obtaining independence
major part of the system had to be rebuilt. Many research and
operational projects were accomplished during last years in co-
operation between Surveying and Mapping Authority of the
Republic of Slovenia (SMA RS) as administrator and budget
provider and Geodetic Institute of Slovenia as producer and
consultant. Basic project was The Strategy of Topographic-
Cartographic System of the Republic of Slovenia (Radovan et
al, 1996), which defined fields included in the System,
explained the situation at that time and proposed the activities to
follow. Some of the activities have been already completed but
a lot of them is still in progress.

SLOVENIA
National geodetic co-ordinate system and geodetic control
network represent mathematical basis of national maps and
other spatial data. Current geodetic system is a system
introduced by former Yugoslavia, with origins from Austro-
Hungarian monarchy. Reference ellipsoid is Bessel, defined in Figure 1: Basic topographic map 1: 5,000 (TTN)
1841. Due to a mistake in orientation of triangulation network it
Is displaced approximately 410 m to the East and 21 m to the Cartographic system consists of maps at scales 1: 5,000 (basic
North. Cartographic projection is Gauss-Krüger and Slovenia is map scale), 1:25,000, 1:50,000, 1:100,000, 1:250,000,
represented in the 5" zone (zone-width is 3° 20"). Co-ordinates 1: 500,000, 1: 750,000 and 1: 1,000,000.
