In addition, the past five years or so have seen a rapid
increase in the number of systems for digital image processing,
with hardware and software being ready for application in 2.2
differential rectification and the compilation of digital
terrain models.
Something new that is just leaving the trial stage is the
n 2.3
"integrated system" concept. The coupling of various hardware
modules and a system software package makes such systems
suitable for complex tasks. They are extremely flexible in
adaptation to the mapping or measuring task in hand, satisfy
highest accuracy requirements and allow recordinq and data

extraction times to be minimized to the point of real-time
operation.
The present trend is characterized by the expanding use of 25
personal computers and of very fast computer systems for image
processing. These systems include peripherals of constantly growing
capabilities, such as drum-type plotters, hard copy printers
and mass memories. 2 6
2. Main tasks and objectives of Commission II
In 1988, Commission II changed its name from "Instruments for
Data Reduction and Analysis" into "Systems for Data Processing
and Analysis". This was to reflect the fact that the subject
matter of our work had substantially changed and that the
objectives had to be redefined.
2.1. It is the main task of Commission II to develop systems,
instruments, processes and methods for the analysis,
processing, storing and presentation of photogrammetric
and remotely sensed primary data. Primary data may have
been acquired as photographs taken from airborne or
spaceborne platforms, digital image data acquired by
means of opto-electronic scanners or radar equipment, or
