The multispectral technique is very use 
ful for the detection of the degree of wa 
ter pollution, as well as, the determina 
tion of the ranges and directions of polu- 
tion propagation. 
The evaluation of the damage to the vege 
tation cover in the dump surroundings can 
be succesfully made by use of multispectral 
photos see (Figures 6 and 7) • The colour 
composits of green, red and infrared bads 
make it possible to distinquuish different 
types of vegetation, as well as differen 
tiating lifeless vegetation from stiil li 
ving vegetation.

4 CONCLUSIONS 
The remote sensing techniques are very 
useful for the assesment of environmental 
changes in the phosphogypsum waste dumping 
areas. Based on the analog and digital da 
ta processing of a series of successively 
taken aerophothos, the quantitative nature 
of the toe-failure process was given. Dump 
forming on an unstable ground base can cau 
se, not only technological problems connect- 
ted with the method of dumping but, what is 
also very important, have a significant de 
structive impact on the natural environment 
The surface and underground waters, as 
well as, vegetation are under the greatest 
stress. The results of the interpretation 
of remotly sensed data have shown that the 
phosphogypsum dump, considered from a engi 
neering-geological, hydrological and hydro- 
geological point of view, can cause serious 
damage to the natural environment. 
The results of the conducted research 
might be used for the creation of an envi 
ronmental monitoring system for such areas, 
which can be effective and complete only if 
based on remote sensing techniques. This 
system can also satisfy many different de 
sign and documentation needs.
