ABSTRACT
A degree course in surveying has been offered in Indonesia for over than 45 years. The new developments in Information
Technology such as the Internet open a new prospect to integrate this technology into curriculum. This paper will review the
Surveying and Spatial Information courses at ITB and discussed the Internet prospect for education. Course content and facilities
will be presented.
1. INTRODUCTION
Undergraduate degrees in Surveying which are typically
designated Bachelor of engineering degrees, are offered at six
Indonesian Universities. Two of them are state universities
that are Institute of Technology Bandung (ITB) and University
of Gajah Mada (UGM). Institute of Technology Bandung has
been involved in the formal education of Surveyors since 1950
when the Department of Geodetic Engineering was
established.
The Department currently offers a comprehensive course at
both undergraduate (S-l) and post-graduate (S-2) levels. The
Department as part of a continuing education program also
regularly offers short courses and workshops covering a variety
of specialist topics. This reflects the commitment of the
surveying profession to raise the general level of formal
education for new practitioners, and the need to provide
established professionals with refresher courses on aspects of
changing technology.
This paper outlines the course content and facilities at ITB. A
list of photogrammetric laboratory is also presented.
2. CURRICULUM
The S-l curriculum is divided into eight semesters for the
completion of the Bachelor Degree course. The general
structure of the cuniculum covers the following five parts of
studies: The general foundation, the science foundation, and
the technical foundation, the professional subjects and elective
subjects (Table 1).

In 1998, the Department undertook a thorough review of its
teaching program. Substantial changes were made to all its
courses in order to meet the new challenges. During the four
years course (8 semesters) of study, students must took a
minimal of 144 credit semester units (SKS) or equivalent to
2304 contact hours in the classroom (Sumarto, 1998). An
average contact hour per week is 18 hours for the total of 16
weeks per semester
Subjects that are related directly to Photogrammetry, Remote
Sensing and GIS has a total of approximately 400 contact
hours. These subjects are obligatory within the course of
studies in ITB. A list of S-l curriculum is presented in the
attachment.
At the S-2 level curriculum is divided into two main streams
that are Advanced Surveying and Spatial Information
Technology. During two years of study for Master level (S-2),
students must take a 36 SKS or equivalent to 576 contact
hours.
3. FACILITIES
In the last two years there were around 600 applicants each
year that choose Geodetic engineering as one of their
