ADJUSTMENT OF A SOLAR TRIANGULATION BY ROELOFS’ METHOD
by G. Masserano
1. — Introduction.
R. Roelofs has developed a method of adjustment of aerial triangulation
by the method of least squares (1) (2) introducing the correlations
among the * quasi observations " to be adjusted. The purpose of this
paper is to supply some basic elements for the extension of the same
method of adjustment to the case of a Santoni solar aerotriangulation.
Justifications and conditions for the eatension of the method to a solar
triangulation.
An adjustment based on the method of least squares requires that
the observations to be adjusted depend, totally or preponderantly, on
accidental causes. The solar aerotriangulation fulfils such a require-
ment because the independence of the models (of which the tilt and
tip are derived from direct solar observations), is one of the most peculiar
features, and because the connection among the models takes place by
means of a x (swing) which is already corrected of systematic errors.
The essential element of Roelofs proceeding is the introduction of
the correlations among the quasi observations " which are dependent
on the same initial observations of parallaxes.
The transmission of those correlations along the succession of photo-
graphs is assured in the solar aerotriangulation by the scale-transfer
and the » connection, these two elements being common to any other
type of triangulation. The correlations impart a fundamental value to
the method. By means of them it is possible to evaluate the systematic
effects of accidental errors, and the whole method gets a physical si-
gnifieance which is unknown to the other methods following mere ma-
thematieal laws.
